Investing in training means investing in the future, especially of young people

In today’s episode of Eu Factor Next we will talk about the ‘Metro Cagliari Repubblica-Matteotti’ project. The project concerns the extension of Line 1 from its current terminus in Piazza Repubblica to Viale Diaz – Viale Bonaria in Cagliari, with an investment amounting to EUR 26 million.

The project represents a significant step towards improving public transport in the city. The hardest challenges to overcome were those related to administrative and technical procedures. This is because it is an infrastructure-impacting project and therefore requires a very high number of authorisations from the various bodies. Each of these procedures has set timeframes, which extend over time, so years pass before work begins, also because of archaeological discoveries.

Nevertheless, from a collective point of view, the benefits are the reduction of urban traffic due to the shift of car travellers to public transport and, consequently, of pollutant emissions and CO2 concentrations towards greater environmental protection and overall sustainability.

European funding was very important for this project, and the reinforcement of Cagliari’s metro line is expected by all citizens, who recognise the ARST company as a reference point for safe and sustainable travel, both environmentally and economically.

‘EU with YOU’ is the Eu Factor Next podcast realised by Raduni, the Association of Italian University Radio Operators, to tell citizens at first hand how European funding is spent. In each episode the podcast will tell the story of a project funded by the European Union and its Cohesion Policy on the national territory.

In today’s episode we will talk about the project “Criticality intervention 1 – scope of intervention municipalities of: Angri, Boscoreale, Castellammare di Stabia, Gragnano, Marigliano, Nocera Inferiore, Nola, Pagani, Pompei, Scafati, Torre Annunziata, Torre del Greco”.

Ente Idrico Campano was able to intercept EUR 50 million under the React-Eu programme, which aims to repair the social and economic damage caused by the pandemic. Ente Idrico Campano, in particular, obtained important resources for interventions aimed at repairing the distribution network, through the React-Eu and further with the Pnrr.

For the first time in more than 50 years, water networks are being upgraded to reduce water wastage, and the technological innovations in this project include mathematical modelling, digital transposition of infrastructures, and the control of supply to households through smart and intelligent meters. These were key factors in achieving first place in the European fund allocation ranking drawn up by the Ministry of Infrastructure.

In addition to the ‘Actions for Water’ project, the ‘Energies for the Sarno’ programme, an environmental recovery and reclamation plan in synergy with the Campania region, has been put in place. By 2025, there will be the elimination of 113 discharges into the environment, guaranteeing the depollution of the river Sarno’s hydrographical basin and the recovery of bathing conditions along the entire Gulf of Naples coastline.

This extraordinary result, made possible thanks to European funds and companies working ‘in the field’ with dozens and dozens of construction sites, can be consulted with the utmost transparency on the portal called Www.energieperilsarno.it.

The European Commission recently launched the European Solar Academy, the first of a series of academies to be established under the Net-Zero Industry Act, aimed at preparing the skills needed along the value chains of net-zero technologies. The role of the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA) academies is to develop learning content and programmes together with industry to ensure sufficient skills and workforce.

It is estimated that in the solar photovoltaic power generation sector alone, around 66 thousand skilled workers will be needed by 2030 for the EU to meet its ambitious renewable energy targets while ensuring industrial competitiveness. Over the next three years, the Solar Academy aims to train 100 thousand workers in the solar photovoltaic industry to address the current shortage of labour and skills in the sector.

Following the successful model of the European Battery Academy, launched in 2022, the Solar Academy will design learning content together with industry and stakeholders in the solar PV sector. The Solar Academy will also develop learning credentials, which will certify the skills acquired by people in its training courses, thereby also promoting labour mobility throughout the single market. The programmes will be implemented through local partners. These can be vocational and educational training (VET) providers, companies, universities or other education and training providers with whom the Academy signs a contract for the implementation of its programmes.

The Commission is supporting the launch of the Solar Academy with EUR 9 million from the Single Market Programme. The project will be implemented by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) through its knowledge and innovation community, EIT Innoenergy.

The Academy is the Commission’s latest initiative to support the EU’s efforts to achieve its ambitious goals under the European Green Deal and the REPowerEU plan, while ensuring that industry is resilient and competitive on the global stage.

The European Commission chose the theme of skills for the awareness-raising campaign of the European Year 2023, confirming it for 2024 as well, indicating the will to address this issue in future policies. In line with the European Year of Competencies, the Emilia-Romagna Region has approved Regional Law 2/2023 for the attraction, retention and valorisation of highly specialised talents, aimed at improving the attractiveness, innovation and competitiveness of the regional system. We interviewed Lara Porciatti from ART-ER to explore the regional initiatives, especially those related to digital transition. The aim of the article is to analyse the European skills framework and the main initiatives undertaken at EU and regional level for training and talent attraction.

The Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) is a major Italian initiative in the field of nuclear fusion.

This project involves the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), ENI and the CREATE consortium. The funding allocated to the project concerns the construction of the DTT plant, which will be located in the Frascati Science Citadel.

The research group has been working on the development of fusion energy for many years. During these years, one of the goals has been to build a plant capable of extracting fusion power and generating electricity. Among other challenges is to create an energy source that does not produce greenhouse gases, thus contributing to the decarbonisation of our society.

Italy, Europe, and researchers around the world have set new challenges with regard to fusion energy, which can have a decisive impact on society and the environment. It is expected that experiments can begin by the end of this decade and that fusion energy can make a contribution to the energy transition.
