Cagliari Repubblica-Matteotti Metro Project

In today’s episode of Eu Factor Next we will talk about the ‘Metro Cagliari Repubblica-Matteotti’ project. The project concerns the extension of Line 1 from its current terminus in Piazza Repubblica to Viale Diaz – Viale Bonaria in Cagliari, with an investment amounting to EUR 26 million.

The project represents a significant step towards improving public transport in the city. The hardest challenges to overcome were those related to administrative and technical procedures. This is because it is an infrastructure-impacting project and therefore requires a very high number of authorisations from the various bodies. Each of these procedures has set timeframes, which extend over time, so years pass before work begins, also because of archaeological discoveries.

Nevertheless, from a collective point of view, the benefits are the reduction of urban traffic due to the shift of car travellers to public transport and, consequently, of pollutant emissions and CO2 concentrations towards greater environmental protection and overall sustainability.

European funding was very important for this project, and the reinforcement of Cagliari’s metro line is expected by all citizens, who recognise the ARST company as a reference point for safe and sustainable travel, both environmentally and economically.

‘EU with YOU’ is the Eu Factor Next podcast realised by Raduni, the Association of Italian University Radio Operators, to tell citizens at first hand how European funding is spent. In each episode the podcast will tell the story of a project funded by the European Union and its Cohesion Policy on the national territory.
