Aosta, a city in north-western Italy, is known for its rich history and beautiful Alpine scenery. Recently, the city has undergone a transformation with the help of MCA, an architectural firm specialising in the preservation of historical buildings and the introduction of modern design elements.

This also includes the project for the construction of the Aosta university campus. This project is destined to become a landmark of contemporary Aosta and it is designed to revitalise an entire area of the territory while maintaining the original layout intact.

The aim of the project is to preserve and enhance the existing structures, while creating new spaces for education, community engagement and modern life.

In fact, with works began in 2013, the project involves the construction of three new buildings that will house the common areas and classrooms of various faculties for around 2,000 students, for a funding of approximately 36 million euros.

“EU with YOU” is the Eu Factor Next podcast realised by Raduni, the Association of Italian University Radio Operators, to tell the public at first hand how European funding is spent. In each episode the podcast will tell the story of a project funded by the European Union and its Cohesion Policy on the national territory.

A technological dispenser to innovate in the wine sector

At a time in which the challenges of our society call for interdisciplinary approaches, the fusion of knowledge from different subjects becomes essential to overcome today’s complexities. The ‘Biobits’ project is an exemplary result of this synergy and of the European commitment to research and the development of innovative solutions.

The heart of this project, conceived by the University of Turin in collaboration with the University of Eastern Piedmont, beats in unison between biology and technology.

The focus of ‘Biobits’ is on agriculture, specifically on the analysis of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae, fungi characterised by their symbiotic relationship with plants. The two universities explored the use of enzymes and proteins derived from such analyses in the industrial context to identify less polluting substances and tools.

Implemented in the Basilicata region, the project ‘Verso Matera, Magna Grecia, Vie della Transumanza del Sale e Francigene’ is part of the 2014-2020 Action and Cohesion Plan (CAP) for an amount of EUR 3.7 million.

This involves the construction of a cycle route, with a route that takes up ancient paths, redeveloping disused tracks. In particular: the Vie del Sale (Salt Roads), the Via Francigene, the Via della Transumanza (Unesco Intangible Heritage) and the Itinerario del Monaco Guidone (Route of the Guidone Monk), drawn up in 1119.

The aim is to facilitate connections between Matera and the neighbouring municipalities, which have decided to work together to build the cycle path. The route will then be directly connected to the FAL (Ferrovie Appulo Lucane) station, a junction with the national train networks.

In the new episode of ‘EU with YOU’ we talk about a green project in Sardinia, to modernise the area’s incinerator, promoting energy sustainability.

A waste-to-energy plant is a particular type of incinerator, which uses the combustion of so-called Municipal Solid Waste, i.e. non-recyclable waste from households. The term ‘revamping’, on the other hand, actually means ‘modernisation process’, which takes place by means of a refurbishment of the plants.

The waste-to-energy plant in question is located in the Zona Industriale Tossilo, in the Province of Nuoro, more precisely in Macomer. The modernisation operations will be carried out by the Padua-based company Area Impianti S.P.A., with the contribution of EUR 42 million allocated, which will also come from European funds, such as: the Cohesion and Development Fund, which in turn is part of the 2014-2020 Action and Cohesion Plan (CAP), but also from the Sardinia Region.

The project was launched on 20 June 2016. But at what stage is its revamping process?

Landfill mining as a practice to revalue brownfield sites and to enable the recovery of various materials.

In recent years, the world has witnessed several traumatic events that have affected our lives and some sectors of the economy. During these events, it has also been difficult to find many raw materials, which are now imported and depend on foreign countries.

This is why, since the 1990s, thought has been given to a way to overcome this critical situation. Several countries have now embraced the phenomenon of ‘landfill mining’ for years. Basically, it is a process of recovering materials and resources from landfills, which are recycled through specific treatment and machinery, with multiple implications for the environment and the use of renewable energy sources.

In particular, the EU financed a project in the province of Caserta, for which €24 million was allocated, and of which €15 million came from the ‘Development and Cohesion Fund’, the EU’s plan for the promotion of the environment and the development of transport infrastructure.

“Environmental recovery with new volume recovery through landfill mining applied in the disused landfills of Maruzzella 1 and 2 and San Tammaro” is the name of the project protagonist of the new episode of the podcast “EU with YOU”: https://podcast.areanews24.it/podcast/areanews-eufactor.htm
