{"id":3069,"date":"2023-04-21T15:40:18","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T13:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eufactor.it\/?p=3069"},"modified":"2023-11-27T14:19:06","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T13:19:06","slug":"european-parliament-approves-a-new-law-to-combat-global-deforestation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eufactor.it\/en\/european-parliament-approves-a-new-law-to-combat-global-deforestation\/","title":{"rendered":"European Parliament approves a new law to combat global deforestation"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"3069\" class=\"elementor elementor-3069\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7770a1b5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7770a1b5\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-70d1a80a\" data-id=\"70d1a80a\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f0d7f95 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4f0d7f95\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span class=\"\" data-index=\"0\"><em>The legislation requires companies to ensure that products sold in the EU do not cause deforestation, to combat climate change and biodiversity loss.<\/em><br \/><br \/><\/span><span class=\"\" data-index=\"1\"><strong>Between 1990 and 2020 deforestation affected a larger area of the EU and EU consumption responsible for about 10% of losses.<\/strong><br \/><br \/><\/span><span class=\"\" data-index=\"2\">The European Parliament has definitively approved a law that provides that companies will be able to<strong> sell in the EU only products whose supplier has issued a declaration of &#8220;due diligence&#8221;<\/strong> certifying that the product does not originate from deforested land and has not contributed to the degradation of forests, including irreplaceable primary forests, after 31 December 2020.<br \/><\/span><span class=\"\" data-index=\"3\">As requested by Parliament, companies will also have to verify that these products comply with the relevant legislation of the country of production, including on human rights, and that the rights of the indigenous peoples concerned have been respected.<br \/><br \/><\/span><span class=\"\" data-index=\"4\">Products covered by the new legislation include <strong>cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soya and wood<\/strong>, including products containing, fed or produced using these products (for example, leather, chocolate and furniture)as originally proposed by the Commission. <\/span><span class=\"\" data-index=\"5\">Also included rubber, coal, printed paper products and a number of palm oil derivatives.<br \/><\/span><span class=\"\" data-index=\"6\">At the request of the EP, the definition of forest degradation has also been extended, which now includes the conversion of primary or naturally regenerated forests into forest plantations or other woodland.<br \/><br \/><\/span><strong><span class=\"hovered\" data-index=\"7\">The text must also be formally approved by the Council and will then be published in the Official Journal of the EU, to enter into force 20 days later, so it will be directly applicable in all EU countries.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><i>More info <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/it\/press-room\/20230414IPR80129\/il-parlamento-approva-una-nuova-legge-per-combattere-la-deforestazione-globale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><i>https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/it\/press-room\/20230414IPR80129\/il-parlamento-approva-una-nuova-legge-per-combattere-la-deforestazione-globale<\/i><\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The legislation requires companies to ensure that products sold in the EU do not cause deforestation, to combat climate change and biodiversity loss.
